The treatment for kidney disease can put any one in major financial worries as it is a very expensive treatment and only dialysis can cost up to RM300 per session whereas a kidney transplant can cost several ringgit which is a big issue unless you are a rich man.
Offering a relief in this situation, the Miri Red Crescent Dialysis Centre offers a less expensive treatment for kidney patients. It is a place which can accommodate up to 400 patients and it was completely funded by public donations.
Talking about the history of the center, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the District Deputy Chairman of Miri Red Crescent, said that he had conducted a detailed research in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore before the center was opened in 1995 at the initial cost of RM1.35 million, mostly funded by public donations.
In addition, he said, “The centre is not run on profit but the payment received from each patient is just for the maintenance of the centre and to pay the salary of the staff. The fee charged is much cheaper than those charged by private centers as it is run on charity”.
Andrew Samuel Labo, a church pastor hoped that the government and private organizations would take some initiatives to make sure that this kind of help reaches to maximum number of people.
