MIRI: Miri District has successfully defended its overall champion title in the inter-district sports for the Primary Schools sports council (MSSR), at the stadium here last Saturday.
Their athletes collected a total of 444 points from 70 medals (41 gold, 24 silver and 5 bronze), way ahead of its nearest rival – Baram District with 242 points from 35 medals (1 gold, 11 silver and 23 bronze).
In third place was Subis District with 218 points from 29 medals – 2 gold, 9 silver and 18 bronze.
Miri also captured the best boy and girl athletes title, and set new records in seven events.
Houng Kee Hui of Boys U-12 category is the best boy athlete, setting two new records in the 200m dash with a time of 25 min bettered the old record by 10 sec and in 100m setting new record with 11.91 sec.
Ling Hung Ber on the other hand set new record in the Girls U-11 200m with a time of 30.12 sec in the long jump with a new record of 3.72 metres.
The other record breakers were Reymar (hurdle 12.50 sec), Wong Jun Ming (long jump 3.68m) while five other records were created by Lim How Sieng (9.12 m shotputt Boys U-10), Lim Jeng Yi (10.66m shotputt Girls U-11), Chew Min Ming (8.01m shotputt Girls U-10), Georgina Inam Berayun (7.62m shotputt Girls U-10) and Chew Yee Thin (9.25m shotputt girls U-12).
The other new records created by Miri were in the 4x100m Boys U-10 with a time of 0.58.44 minute and in the 4x100m girls U-11 with a time of 0.59 minute.
The Deputy Education Officer, Alias Ngah officiated at the closing ceremony.
Earlier in his speech, Alias urged the athletes to improve their performances in order to represent Miri at the state and national level meet.
He also urged those selected for the state level field and track meet to be prepared to face stiff challenge from athletes of other division.
Miri will host the athletic meet from April 11-14.
