MIRI: A man was arrested by police for wearing a yellow t-shirt bearing the word ‘Bersih 2.0’.

Miri police chief ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim who confirmed the arrest yesterday said the man was arrested near a restaurant at Jalan Permaisuri here around 12.45pm.

The man, believed local, was brought to the central police station for further investigation and detention.

“We are going to investigate the offence which comes under the Society Act 1966. The suspect is likely to be charged under Section 47 of Society Act 1966 for promoting ‘Bersih 2.0’, an illegal society by wearing the t-shirt,” Jamaluddin told thesundaypost when approached at the Central Police Station here yesterday.

He said the remand order would be obtained from the court.

The suspect was the second person to be arrested and detained by police for wearing the Bersih t-shirt.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth secretary Zulhaidah Suboh was arrested on Monday on her arrival at Miri Airport from Kuching.

Zulhaidah faces two charges under Section 47 of the Society Act 1966 (Act 335) for displaying and promoting the rally by wearing the t-shirt and possessing two of them.

The 38-year-old aspiring politician claimed trial on both charges and was ordered by Miri Magistrate’s Court to be released on RM4,000 bail each with one surety.

The offences call for a jail term of not more than two years or fine of not more than RM5,000 or both upon conviction.

Although the situation in Miri is under control and orderly, they would still be monitoring it, Jamaluddin said.

“Action will be taken against those joining and organising the rally or gathering. We will be monitoring the situation to ensure there will be no illegal assembly or rally,” he added.

Police personnel were deployed in the commercial area along Jalan Permaisuri here yesterday.

Until yesterday, the police did not receive any application to hold a ‘Bersih 2.0’ gathering.

Meanwhile, Miri PKR chief Dr Michael Teo accompanied by Zulhaidah and party supporters took part in a walkabout to show their support for the reason ‘Bersih 2.0’ was held.
