Chief Minister says opposition’s antics can only disrupt development plans

MIRI: Shouting, complaining and criticising the government will not bring development and progress to the state and people, said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in referring to the opposition.

Speaking at the earth breaking ceremony for the proposed single carriageway link road from Pujut Interchange to Jalan Tudan/Kuala Baram here yesterday, he pointed out while the opposition had only shouted and criticised, Piasau incumbent Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan and his team had planned and implemented projects to develop Miri and turned it into a thriving city.

“All these happened without anybody shouting and criticising the government. In fact, we had much better peace and harmony in the way we worked in the early days. Today Miri has grown into a city with more than double in population it had in the 80s.”

It took a serious team of people, good planning and stable government to change Miri into what it is today, he added.

He cited Tudan as an example of the expansion and development of Miri, “Tudan is bigger than the old Miri. Tudan is a big town by itself. We have to find a lot of money to cope with the development in the expansion of Miri,”

Taib pointed out that it was difficult to develop Miri as it was sandwiched between the sea and hills but the state government tackled this challenge by developing the areas behind Canada Hill and reclaiming the land in front of the city.

“All this happened not because of the complaints and shouting but because of the smooth co-operation between politicians and public and private sectors.”

He warned that development plans of the city would be disrupted if the opposition were to win the constituencies in the city saying, “We want to build Miri all the way across the river up to the Pujut interchange.”

Miri would continue to prosper and develop with construction of a two lanes bridge across Miri River toward Piasau and another road from Miri Hospital to Riam Road, he added.

“You must remember that all these things are the fruits of harmonious political atmosphere. I would like you to keep up all these things until you find a better alternative. People who shout and complain cannot become an alternative.”

Also present were Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Sri Peter Chin, Datuk Sri Michael Manyin Jawong, Senadin and Pujut incumbents Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Andy Chia and Tan Sri Ling Chiong Ho.
