MIRI: Mirians should avoid gutter politics but gear themselves towards a brighter future with more progress under the BN leadership and representation.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said this in speech at the meet-the-people session by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at Miri Civic Centre yesterday.

“We are one big Miri family, co-operating with each other and working in harmony, and we don’t want incessant arguments which is a waste of time,” he said.

Miri, he added, had progressed from a small town into a city under the visionary and capable leadership of the Chief Minister who was born here.

“Mirians are indeed grateful for his contribution, guidance, commitment and political will in forging the development of Miri from that of an oil town to a vibrant and progressive cosmopolitan city,” he said.

The city of 280,000 is now the most important centre for trade, economy and tourism in northern Sarawak.

On the forthcoming state elections, Dr Chan urged the people to close ranks and strengthen unity and harmony to build a more progressive and prosperous Sarawak.

“Let us continue to build on our strength and do our level best to counter the baseless allegations and propaganda of the opposition,” he said.

The gathering was attended by political leaders and representatives from BN component parties, NGOs and associations in MIri.

Also present were Taib’s wife, Puan Sri Ragad Alkurdi, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin, Assistant Minister of Communications and Sports, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, state assemblymen Andy Chia (Pujut) and Aidan Wing (Lambir), Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, Sebastian Ting, political secretary to Peter Chin, Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai and local dignitaries.
