Dr Chan blasts those out to create a mess

MIRI: Piasau incumbent Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said he would not tolerate those who want to destroy unity in the state.

“Miri is a model area for integration and for 1Malaysia. I’m going to work my guts out to make sure they don’t destroy the 1Malaysia concept and unity. We Mirians know what to do,” he said at `Unity Kindergarten Telematch’ here yesterday.

Dr Chan said Mirians and Sarawakians want to live in peace, harmony and stability.

“This is what we want. We want a place that we can make a living in a modern setting and we want to keep up with the rest of the world. This is what we are all working for. I don’t want anybody to come and try to destroy this. I will come back from my grave and haunt those fellows who do this.”

He said it was important for the people to be passionate about Miri.

“I was born, schooled and worked in Miri. I’m very passionate about Miri. I will love it until the day I die,” said Dr Chan.

“I will do and contribute whatever I can for Miri. This is the passion I have for Miri. That is why some people keep saying that Miri is ‘George Town’. I don’t mind because I want Miri to progress and be in the forefront. I want it to be a leading example that a good multi-racial society can really help to promote the country and image overseas.”

The opposition, he said, had put a lot of resources into Miri and considered it part of their vision to form the state government.

Dr Chan said: “We are all ready for that and we know this (opposition intention) because the head of the party is here. We will defend Miri with all our might.”

On whether Miri might fall into the hands of the opposition, Dr Chan said: “Kuching is not Miri … Miri is not Kuching. We are all very united and all of us are working as a team. It is teamwork here and people of Miri can see that we work as a team. I am sure Miri people realise that we don’t work for ourselves, but for Miri.”

Dr Chan is confident he would be able to defend his seat.

“If my passion is the measure … I’m confident as I want to help Miri. If the people use all sorts of funny things, then I don’t know. If the passion is the measure of my success then I’m very confident that my passion will override any of them.”
