MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) organising secretary and Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui is keeping mum on speculation that the party’s southern branches would meet in Kuching today to endorse him to run for president at the Triennial Delegates Conference in December.
Chin is also expected to team up with party treasurer Datuk David Teng Lung Chi to take on the team of deputy secretary-general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and Senadin Branch chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
Chin, however, said party unity should be the uppermost consideration and appealed to all party members, including those in his Miri-Sibuti liaison parliamentary committee to refrain from any action or words which could jeopardise unity.
Speaking at a the meet-the-people session at the SUPP office here yesterday, he urged the public and press not to speculate, but confirmed that he would be meeting representatives from branches in Kuching and some from central and northern Sarawak today.
“They ask to meet and I don’t know what they are going to say, so wait until after the meeting,” he said.
He kept mum on what would be on the agenda or the likely outcome, saying he did not rule out the possibility of not agreeing to what the southern SUPP branches might want him to do.
“The meeting is not my own doing or request, as it these leaders and representatives who want to meet me and as organising secretary, I don’t see it wrong to meet and listen to what they have to say,” he added.
Wong and Lee , the two Barisan Nasional Chinese surviving candidates in the last state election, had declared their readiness to lead the party following defeat of party president Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan Hong Nam.
Chin had hinted his desire to let younger leaders take over and prominent businessman Hii King Chiong had publicly declared his intention to lead Piasau SUPP branch which is headed by Dr Chan.
Chin also declined to comment on whether he would be contesting against Hii in Piasau branch, saying unity was his foremost concern in the party and in the SUPP Miri-Sibuti liaison parliamentary committee.
