MIRI: Women play an important role in ensuring the overall health of their families, which consequently contribute towards the creation of healthy Malaysian societies.

As such, women, who traditionally prepare food for the families, must have greater awareness on the need to prepare healthy meals, one of the important factors in preventing many diseases.

Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin when stressing these also said it was equally important for every individual to take care of his or her own health.

“Health should be our responsibility. Of course, when we are sick we seek medical treatment.

“Thus, women, when you have the chance, attend health talks to gain the latest information from health specialists to help reduce incidents of many preventable diseases that are on the rise,” he said.

Lee made the remark when representing the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Energy, Datuk Seri Peter Chin in officiating at a health talk organised in Miri yesterday.

Chin was the sponsor of the half-day talk held in conjunction with the World Health Day, to create greater awareness on healthy lifestyle.

Among those present were Datin Seri Ruby Chin, the wife of the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Peter Chin, his political secretary Datuk Sebastian Ting, Resident Antonio Kathi Galis, mayor of Miri City Lawrence Lai Yew Son and the organising chairperson Kijan Toynbee, who is also a political secretary to the Chief Minister.

Lee commended the newly established Cultural sub-committee of the Community Development Standing Committee of the Miri City Council for organising the talk.

“This talk, which is part of the social engineering programmes of the government, should be intensified and later to include welfare programmes apart from changing the mindset of Miri for example to support the greening programme,” he urged.

He added that the government wanted the people to be progressive and positive so that they could live happily, harmoniously and in good health.

Lee cautioned that unless the people are fully aware of the importance of healthy lifestyle, many would suffer adding that the MRC’s Kidney Dialysis Centre is one of the clear examples that medical treatments are expensive.

He said 90 per cent of the 230 patients at the centre had to be heavily subsidised as they could not afford the high cost of dialysis of between RM3,000 and RM5,000 per month.

Meanwhile, some 600 ladies representing the various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and political party attended the talk, jointly presented by two specialists from the Miri Hospital.

They were Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Norzatulsyima Nasirud, who spoke on Osteoporosis and Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Dr Yusmadi Abdullah, who delivered a talk on women’s cancer.

MIRI: Cahya Mata Sarawak Premix (CMSP) semalam memohon maaf kepada masyarakat sekeliling di sini atas kesulitan yang dihadapi berikutan kejadian tumpahan minyak diesel di lojinya pada 4 Mac 2012 (Ahad) lalu.

Menurut Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan CMS Berhad Datuk Richard Curtis, pihaknya mengesahkan bahawa terdapat tumpahan minyak di loji premix milik mereka pada tarikh yang dinyatakan.

Berikutan itu, pihaknya telah melaksanakan segera semua langkah keselamatan untuk menghentikan tumpahan dan segala kandungannya terhadap persekitaran.

“Kami telah membuat laporan polis tentang insiden berkenaan dan memberikan kerjasama dengan pihak berkuasa untuk mengetahui sebab berlakunya tumpahan tersebut,” kata Richard dalam satu sidang media semalam.

Katanya, CMSP turut berterima kasih ke atas semua pihak yang memberikan kerjasama dan banyak membantu mereka terutama Jabatan Alam Sekitar (JAS) berkaitan hal tersebut.

Ketika ditanya tentang operasi loji itu, Richard memberitahu bahawa pihaknya sedang menanti arahan daripada kerajaan.

“Kami akan akur jika kerajaan mengarahkan loji kami dipindahkan, buat masa ini kami sedang menanti arahan dan laporan,” jelasnya.

Ketika ini semua operasi di loji itu dihentikan sehingga satu laporan penuh diterima.

Loji dimaksudkan telah beroperasi sejak1992 dan tidak pernah merekodkan sebarang insiden negatif.

LAMBIR, 3 Mac – Penduduk di Miri dan Bekenu tidak perlu bimbang dengan tahap keselamatan air paip kerana ia terbukti selamat digunakan, kata Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif (CEO) LAKU Management Sdn Bhd, Wong Tiong Kai.

“Bagi membuktikan ia benar-benar selamat, saya sendiri telah meminum air tersebut terlebih dahulu pagi tadi. Saya menjamin bekalan air paip selamat digunakan kerana kita sudah melakukan rawatan yang mematuhi piawaian yang ditetapkan” katanya semasa sidang media di pejabat Residen Miri selepas mesyuarat bedah siasat oleh LAKU bersama jabatan-jabatan dan agensi kerajaan berkaitan.

Turut pergi ke Loji Rawatan Air di Lambir dan meminum air di situ ialah Menteri Muda Komunikasi, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Setiausaha Politik Menteri Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau dan Air, Dato’ Sebastian Ting dan Pengurus LAKU Wilayah Miri, Lo Su Onn.

Mengulas lanjut, loji rawatan air modul 4 Lambir ditutup pada jam 8.30 malam pada 3 Mac lalu selepas penemuan tompokan minyak di pusat pengambilan air di Sungai Liku.

“Penutupan ini bagi memastikan tumpahan itu tidak mencemari sistem saluran air. Kita juga menggunakan sistem boswells semasa operasi namun ia hanya dapat menghasilkan satu pertiga daripada jumlah penggunaan keseluruhan kelmarin.”

“Ini menyebabkan kita menghadapi kekurangan bekalan air untuk memenuhi keperluan kira-kira 300,000 penduduk di Miri dan Bekenu.,” kata Wong.

Jelas Wong, loji modul empat dibuka untuk operasi pada jam 7 malam pada 4 Mac dan lebih banyak air disalurkan.

Mengenai aduan penduduk di beberapa kawasan mengenai air berkelodak, Wong berkata ia berpunca daripada penutupan modul empat sebelum ini dan bukannya berpunca daripada tumpahan itu.

“LAKU telah menghantar kakitangan mereka untuk mengepam keluar air yang berkelodak tersebut dan keadaan dijangka pulih sepenuhnya hari Selasa.”

Bekalan air paip kembali pulih pada hari ini dan penduduk yang tinggal di kawasan tinggi berkemungkinan menghadapi tekanan air rendah.

Dalam pada itu, LAKU memohon maaf kepada seluruh penduduk Miri diatas segala kesulitan yang dihadapi semasa insiden tersebut.

PENCEMARAN AIR DI MIRI SARAWAK

MIRI: Lebih 300,000 penduduk di bandar raya Miri dan Daerah Bekenu semalam terjejas bekalan air bersih selepas sumber air di Sungai Liku tercemar oleh tumpahan minyak diesel daripada tangki simpanan minyak sebuah syarikat swasta yang terletak dua kilometer dari sungai tersebut.

Dianggarkan, sejumlah 14,000 liter minyak diesel yang digunakan untuk proses penurapan jalan yang disimpan di dalam tangki milik syarikat berkenaan, tumpah ke tanah dan seterusnya mengalir ke Sungai Liku, selepas saluran tangki tersebut bocor dan tidak disedari oleh para pekerjanya.

Pengurus LAKU Management Sdn Bhd (LAKU) Kawasan Miri, Lo Su Onn yang ditemui di Loji Perawatan Air LAKU di Lambir semalam memberitahu, pencemaran itu disedari oleh pekerja loji berkenaan pada jam 8.30 malam kelmarin apabila terhidu bau diesel yang kuat dari kawasan pengambilan air.

Sebaik menyedari terdapatnya tumpahan minyak, kakitangan yang bertanggungjawab menyelenggara loji ketika itu bertindak menutup operasi loji serta-merta bagi mengelak air yang telah tercemar terus memasuki kawasan penapisan dan rawatan.

“Pihak kami mula mencari punca pencemaran awal pagi tadi (semalam) dan mendapati punca tumpahan adalah daripada sebuah syarikat membuat tar jalan. Serentak itu, kita memaklumkan kepada pasukan bertindak mengenai tumpahan minyak untuk mendapatkan bantuan segera,” katanya.

“Sekarang (pagi semalam) kita bergantung kepada sumber bekalan air yang sudah dirawat di loji tangki simpanan sedia ada untuk membekalkan air kepada penduduk Miri.

“Namun, jumlah air bersih yang disimpan di tangki berkenaan agak terhad. Ia menyebabkan kita terpaksa mengurangkan penyaluran air untuk penduduk di bandar raya Miri mulai tengah hari supaya bekalan air tidak putus,” katanya.

Bagaimanapun, menurut Lo, bukan mudah bagi pihaknya membersihkan pencemaran itu kerana tumpahan minyak terbabit sudah meresap ke dalam tanah dan mengalir di sepanjang sungai tersebut.

LAKU, katanya, terpaksa mengepam air dari Sungai Bakong untuk disalurkan ke Sungai Liku bagi membersihkan tumpahan minyak di sepanjang kawasan hulu sungai berkenaan.

Tambahnya, bekalan air dijangka pulih jam 8 malam ini.

Sementara itu, Pasukan Bertindak Kecemasan bagi Tumpahan Minyak daripada Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB) yang diketuai oleh Pegawainya, Martin Entamin dan Petronas Carigali yang diketuai oleh Zaffeer Ahmad Kiprawi turut tiba di loji bersama peralatan untuk menampan serta menyedut tumpahan minyak.

Kedua-dua pasukan turut dibantu oleh anggota daripada Jabatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (JPAM) dan Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat yang berada di kedua-dua lokasi iaitu loji perawatan air dan punca tumpahan minyak.

Peralatan menyedut minyak terkini, ‘Mantaray’ terpaksa digunakan dalam operasi tersebut.

Sehingga jam 5 petang semalam, kerja-kerja menghalang tumpahan dan pembersihan di loji perawatan masih dilakukan.

Turut berada di lokasi meninjau keadaan ialah Menteri Muda Komunikasi, Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Dalam pada itu, penduduk di Miri mulai mengalami ketiadaan bekalan air bersih sekitar jam 1 petang semalam, sekali gus menyebabkan ramai penduduk terpaksa membeli air mineral yang dibotolkan.

Berita ketiadaan air yang diuar-uarkan menerusi laman sosial, media elektronik telah menyebabkan pembelian panik air mineral yang dibotolkan, sehingga barisan panjang di beberapa buah pasar raya.

Tinjauan Utusan Borneo turut mendapati beberapa buah premis kecil dan pasar raya telah kehabisan stok air mineral.

Di kawasan Pujut 7, air mineral dijual di tepi jalan seperti menjual buah durian sehingga menimbulkan kesesakan jalan raya kerana diserbu orang ramai.

Fuel spill triggers water panic

MIRI: The price of bottled water skyrocketed to RM25 per box from the usual price of RM8 here and in Bekenu yesterday caused by panic buying as taps ran dry following the leakage of diesel from the pipeline of a premix plant along Miri-Bintulu Road into Sungei Liku, the main source for treated water for the whole area.

The plea by city mayor Lawrence Lai who is also a director of Lembaga Air Kawasan Utara (Laku) here, to traders not to hike the prices fell on deaf ears as every retail shop ran out of bottled water and stalls selling bottled water mushroomed along several roads.

However, the mad rush for the water turned out to be unnecessary as Laku issued a statement last night that water supply would be back to normal today as the treatment plant at Sungei Liku had resumed full pumping into the distribution system last night.

“Laku Miri at 6pm has already pumped the water from the river source for testing. However, the authority cannot release the supply until they are satisfied the water quality complied with the industrial standard safety.

“If the water quality complied with the standard, hopefully supply will resume tomorrow (Monday),” Lai said when contacted by The Borneo Post last night.

Personnel from the emergency response unit comprising Laku, Shell and Petronas were on the ground almost immediately to contain the spillage, he added.

The contamination was detected at about 8.30pm on Saturday when Laku staff manning the water treatment plant smelt diesel from the river.

They immediately stop pumping the water from the river at raw water intake pump house to stop contaminated water getting into the plant and traced the source of the spillage.

Laku manager Lo Su Onn here told the press yesterday more than 300,000 people here and in Bekenu were affected by the stoppage of the treatment plant.

According to Lo, consumers in Miri and Bekenu used around 125 million litres per-day and to immediately make up for the supply disruption Laku had started pumping eight underground water wells which had the capacity of producing 80 million litre per day.

Another measure taken by Laku was to pump water from Bakong River and divert it into Sungai Liku to flush out the diesel.

However, as Bakong River and Sungai Liku are 13 km apart it would take at least six hours for the diverted water to reach Sungai Liku.

Assistant minister of Water Supply Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran when contacted yesterday said that the ministry was looking seriously into the situation and was assessing the situation.

Bottled water runs out in Miri due to panic buying

MIRI: Supermarkets, grocery stores and even petrol stations across Miri have run out of bottled waters as residents rushed to ensure adequate water stock for their own use following fears that water supply might be cut off for a few days.

The panic buying is triggered by a water supply disruption which occurred when diesel from a premix plant along Miri-Bintulu Road leaked and contaminated Sungai Liku, which is Lembaga Air Kawasan Utara (Laku)’s main source of raw water for Miri and Bekenu.

The spill was discovered at about 8.30pm on Saturday, and Laku’s staff immediately stopped pumping water from the river. The management of the premix plant was ordered to stop the leakage and an earth bump was built to stop the diesel from following into the river.

Two shopkeepers at Piasau area, who wanted to remain anonymous, revealed to the Borneo Post Adventure Team (BAT) late yesterday evening that bottled waters had run out.

“Some even bought ice cubes to use in cooking. Other than that, people also grabbed packet juices and milk.”

A customer, Semawi Madeli from Tudan, when met at one of the grocery stores, said water supply had already been cut off earlier yesterday.

“I don’t know if the news is true or not but I heard there will be no water for the next two to three days.”

Sarif Abdullah, who lives in Piasau, said he rushed out to grab some bottled waters when he caught wind of the water issue.

“I am just not sure what is really going on,” he said, looking worried when he left the store empty handed.

A lady from Kampung Pujut, Taman Kerbau here, Ayu Rahayu, did not even step into the grocery store when she first learned from other disappointed customers that bottled waters had run out. She is now feeling the heat.

“This is the fourth shop I have stopped to check if there are still bottled water available. The water supply to my house was cut off at around 2pm.”

Kueh seller Azrin Ren came in shortly after and asked the shopkeeper for bottled waters, but was told that there were none left.

He revealed that bottled waters had run out at stores in Kenyalang, Century and even Petronas stations after searching at these areas earlier on.

“I heard from my cousin that there would be no water supply for the next few days. I just want to grab some bottled waters for the elders in my family,” he said, pointing to the half empty fridge with fruit juices and milk at the store.

26 Nov, Miri – Kehangatan Sabtu ditingkatkan dengan berlangsungnya Pertandingan Ucapan Humor dan Penilaian Ucapan untuk ahli Kelab Pidato Toastmasters Miri. Jennifer Hii memenangi tempat pertama dalam Pertandingan Ucapan Humor manakala Taqiuddin menjuarai Pertandingan Penilaian Ucapan.

Diadakan di tempat kelab biasa mengadakan perjumpaan iaitu Bangunan Persatuan Melayu Miri, pertandingan ini adalah untuk ahli berlatih memberikan ucapan di hadapan pendengar lain, selain pendengar biasa. Ustaz Amin Wahid mendapat tempat kedua dan Taqiuddin di tempat ketiga untuk Pertandingan Ucapan Humor. Dalam kategori Penilaian Ucapan pula, Jennifer Hii memperolehi tempat kedua dan diikuti Ustaz Amin Wahid.

Memburu kejuaraan bukanlah perkara utama, tetapi meningkatkan keyakinan diri serta jati diri dikalangan ahli kelab samada sebagai peserta ataupun ahli jawatankuasa pertandingan. Pertandingan ini juga mengukuhkan tali silaturahim diantara kelab lain seperti Miri Toastmasters Club yang datang untuk membantu serta memberi sokongan.

Projek pembesaran Home For The Aged perlu tambahan RM100 ribu

KROKOP, 19 November – Jawatankuasa projek pembesaran rumah jagaan warga tua (Home For The Aged) Krokop 9 memerlukan tambahan RM100,000 untuk menyiapkan projek itu.

Pengerusinya Andy Chia memberitahu, projek melibatkan pembinaan dewan, tandas, tempat rawatan, dapur dan ruang makan itu menelan kos RM700,000 dan setakat ini mereka berjaya mengutip hanya RM600,000.

“Projek ini sudah bermula sejak Ogos lalu dan berdasarkan jadual perancangan serta peruntukan, ia dijangka siap sepenuhnya pada Mei tahun depan. Namun kita memerlukan peruntukan tambahan,” katanya pada majlis penyampaian cek sumbangan di Home for The Aged, Krokop 9 hari ini.

Hadir sama Timbalan Pengerusi jawatankuasa projek merangkap Setiausaha Politik Menteri Tenaga Teknologi Hijau dan Air, Dato’ Sebastian Ting.

MAYOR: LANTIKAN RAKYAT BIASA MENJADI KAUNSELOR

Lantikan rakyat biasa menjadi kaunselor wajar dipertimbangkan – Lawrence Lai



PUSAT BANDAR— Cadangan melantik rakyat biasa dan bukannya ahli politik untuk memegang jawatan kaunselor Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan (PBT) mungkin wajar dipertimbangkan bagi mengurangkan ‘political flavour’, kata Datuk Bandar Miri Lawrence Lai.

Lai memberitahu, sebelum ini kaunselor dilantik dari kalangan ahli parti komponen Barisan Nasional iaitu Parti Rakyat Bersatu Sarawak (SUPP), Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) dan Parti Demokratik Progresif Sarawak (SPDP).

Katanya, pelantikan dari parti politik ini sedikit sebanyak memberi kesan kurang baik kerana golongan tertentu cenderung menganggap fungsi majlis tempatan ‘dipolitikkan’ dan dipengaruhi oleh kepentingan parti tertentu.

“Justeru untuk mengurangkan persepsi ‘political flavour’ ini, saya menyambut baik cadangan Ketua Menteri Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud bar-baru ini untuk melantik kaunselor di kalangan rakyat biasa atau pertubuhan bukan kerajaan (NGO) yang tiada kaitan dengan politik,” katanya ketika ditemui hari ini.

Lai menambah, kaunselor boleh dilantik di kalangan mereka yang bergiat aktif dalam pertubuhan dan NGO seperti Bulan Sabit Merah, persekutuan Cina, pertubuhan bumiputera, persatuan wanita, belia dan warga emas.

“Mereka mempunyai banyak masa yang terluang selain mewakili komuniti dari pelbagai lapisan. Namun saya percaya perubahan ini tidak drastik dan mengambil masa lima hingga enam tahun untuk dilaksanakan,” katanya.

Mengenai pelantikan kaunselor untuk MBM, Lai berkata ia ditentukan oleh Kerajaan Negeri dan bukannya parti politik yang diwakili oleh mereka.

Setakat ini Majlis Bandaraya Miri mempunyai 27 kaunselor termasuk datuk bandar.

Chin: Be alert to possibility of floods, landslides

MIRI: Residents of areas prone to floods and landslides were advised to be alert to unusual signs such as sudden earth movements during the yearend rainy season.

Miri MP Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui gave this warning to residents, especially those residing at Canada Hill in Miri, Marudi and Subis.

“Residential areas on Canada Hill are prone to landslides, especially during heavy rain downpour, so residents need to be alert to any unwanted incident and take extra precautions,” he advised.

He said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Muhyiddin Yassin, as chairman for the National Disaster and Relief Committee, had announced flood disaster preparation in view of persistent heavy rains.

“The committee is activating the entire disaster and relief centre throughout the country including Sabah and Sarawak,” he said. Sarawak has a disaster relief centre in most divisions.

“We expect and prepare for the worst in view of the recent floods in Thailand,” he said.

The committee has started alerting every centre to prepare for flooding nationwide.

“The centres have alerted residents in low-lying areas to the possibility of floods and landslides,” Chin said.

They are kept busy whenever rain come a calling because it would mean everyone having to start carrying and emptying basins and pails to ensure that their belongings are not ruined by the downpour.

However, their misery will end in about three days’ time as the local authority is presently repairing the small double-storey house under the government’s “Nadi Kasih” initiative.

Saleha’s family is among the 52 hardcore poor families here who would benefit from the project which started its operation here recently.

‘Nadi Kasih’ is financed by 1Malaysia Development Berhad is only meant for house-repair.

Under this project, the beneficiary would be allocated RM5,000 to repair their houses, and the repair cost must not exceed this amount.

Saleha said she and her family were thankful to the government for making their life more comfortable.

“I want to thank the government for making our dream come true. All this while I have been requesting for assistance to change the leaking rooftop of my house,” said the granny who is staying with her daughter, daughter-in-law and five grandchildren.

Saleha added that her family could not afford to repair the roof because money from selling kuih could hardly make ends meet.

Meanwhile, the SUPP Piasau vice chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting, together with the chairman of Neigbourhood Committee (RT) Piasau 1 Sazali Sunji visited Saleha yesterday.

Ting, among others, assured Saleha that the repair works would be completed in a few days.

He also took down personal details of Saleha’s family to assist the family secure assistance from the Welfare Department.

（本报美里13日讯）美里副市长莫哈末齐表示，娼妓当街猖狂拉客，引起本地一群关心社会问题的妇女发出强烈不满，他能理解她们的感受。

他坦言，当他在市区走动时，亦曾多次目睹娼妓当街拉客，所以，他亦非常赞成有关当局严厉检举这些不道德活动，免得令美里旅游城蒙上污名。

但是，他也希望公众明白，取缔娼妓或制止外国女郎，持着旅游证件入境，却在脚底按摩院或在酒廊非法工作，甚至进行不道德行为，市政局并没有权力去取缔她们。有鉴于此，他个人也赞成市长赖耀松之前发出的谈话，即当局解冻脚底按摩院，并非是纵容外国女子在按摩院工作，或是默许娼妓问题。
违规业者吊销执照

他认为，市政局仅赋予权力发出营业执照给脚底按摩院业者，如果业者雇用非法劳工或进行不道德运作，市政局不会姑息类似情况发生，只要拿出证据，当局将撤销有关业者的营业执照。

他一再强调，美里要打造成为旅游城，并不是要以经营黄色架步事业来吸引游客的旅游城市。

他表示，要遏制美里日愈猖獗的娼妓和外国女子非法工作的社会问题，应该交由警方和移民局及劳工部的执法官员展开严厉取缔行动，重重打击黄色架步才是关键。市政局肯定会配合这项扫黄行动，撤销所有涉及不法经营的脚底按摩院的执照。

Mixed reactions to Bersih 2.0’s latest decision

MIRI: The people here have mixed feelings about the decision made by Bersih 2.0 organisers to go ahead with the July 9 rally but in a stadium and not on the street.

The decision was announced by its chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan after an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara on Tuesday.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said he was always against illegal rallies because it could bring
about many negative consequences to the people and country.

“I thank God for His intervention through Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. They have prevented untold disaster from happening by getting the proposed Bersih 2.0 street rally off the street,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Dennis, who is also Telang Usan PBB Youth chief and deputy information chief of PBB Youth, said he believed the rally organised must have thought they could achieve whatever agenda they might have on the streets.

“The aftermath of previous street rallies held in our country and in other counties is for all to see. Even when the organisers guaranteed that their rallies would be peaceful, untold destruction to properties and injuries to people often happened,” he said.

Dennis believed that the July 9 rally was politically motivated based on its timing and the people behind it.

“I’m also perplexed with the reason given in support of the street demonstration by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, the Menteri Besar of Selangor. He said that the rally was to voice the demands of the people and it was for the future generation. What kind of example is there to be learned by our young generation with all the chaos created by illegal rallies?”

Dennis added that Telang Usan PBB Youth supported all initiatives taken by the government, and that include joining other BN Youth members to mount counter rallies if requested to do so.

Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling Sie Kiong, meanwhile, said he respected the decision of Bersih 2.0 to call off the street rally. It is a “positive step” and a clear show of respect for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The onus now lies with the Najib administration to lift the ban on Bersih 2.0. Up to now some 200 arrests have been made by the police based on unjustifiable grounds such as wearing Bersih t-shirts.

“The police must drop the charges immediately and release those under remand, such PKR’s Zulhaidah Suboh. The Home Minister should also release all six individuals detained under the Emergency Ordinance (EO), including Sungei Siput MP Dr. Jayakumar.”

Meanwhile, Peter Kallang, who is the chairman of Persatuan Kenyah Miri (PKM) and Orang Ulu National Association (Miri), described the eight demands by Bersih as “reasonable and necessary”.

This is because the eight points are some of the basic characteristics which are “justifiably expected of a country which is elected by and answerable to the civil society”.

“These demands are not new as they have been in the public arena for a long time, yet the responds could either be pending or not fulfilling. So I can well understand why the rally is the next step.”

Peter said Ambiga and her boys had clearly showed they are reasonable people and one who were willing to listen to reason by taking the rally off the streets and into a stadium after the audience with the King.

He added that holding the rally in a stadium is perhaps the best alternative to avoid irresponsible elements from hijacking the event for their own immoral objectives.

“My view is that we must keep the original objective of the even foremost in our mind. The objective of the event is inclusive and good for every Malaysian, irrespective of background, so that we will continue to progress as responsible society upholding justice for each one of us.

“An open, transparent and just society is vital to achieve developed nation status by 2020.”

MIRI: Police yesterday advised members of the public not to be involved in any local rally which support the Bersih 2.0 rally which is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on July 9.

Miri district police chief ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim said unless they had a permit to stage the rally as required by law, stern legal action would be taken against everyone involved.

He also advised members of the public not to wear yellow T-shirts this Saturday as they might be subjected to scrutiny by his men.

“At the moment, Miri police have yet to receive any application for permit to hold the rally in support of the Bersih 2.0,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was asked to comment on recent news report that such rallies might be held here, in Bintulu, Sibu and Kuching.

State DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng told a press conference in Sibu on Tuesday that all its 12 assemblypersons in the state would assemble in Kuching this Saturday to lend support to the Bersih 2.0 rally which calls for fair and free elections.

On comments made by the opposition concerning the arrest and remand of state PKR Youth secretary Zolhaidah Suboh on Monday at Miri Airport, ACP Jamaluddin explained that the move was made under Section 47 of the Society Act 1966 to facilitate investigation.

Zolhaidah, 38, who was wearing a yellow T-shirt printed with the words ‘Bersih 2.0’, was arrested upon emerging from the arrival hall of the airport after a flight from Kuching.

Thus far no further arrest or criminal offences in connection with the rally have been made.

Meanwhile, Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling Sie Kiong told a press conference here on Tuesday that the remand was “unnecessary” and the grounds stated by the police were inadequate.

Ling, who is Zolhaidah’s counsel, said S. Manikavasagam was detained and investigated by the police under the same section but was
released four hours later after his statement was recorded.

Thus, he said, the police here should have the same capability and efficiency in completing their investigation fast in Zolhaidah’s case.

PETALING JAYA: The price of premium RON97 petrol will be increased by 20 sen to a record high of RM2.90 per litre from Thursday.

"The price of RON97 fluctuates as the Government has lifted the subsidy for this petrol," Malaysian Petrol Dealers Association president Datuk Hashim Othman said Wednesday when confirming the price increase.

The previous increase was a month ago.

"The price of RON97 might go down in future, but this depends on the political situation in the Middle East as well as natural disasters," he added.

Subsidised RON95 petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged.
