Representatives from 33 branches pledge to support him for SUPP presidency
KUCHING: The heat is on in the race for the SUPP presidency, with party organising secretary Datuk Seri Peter Chin confirming his candidacy.
Chin said he could not “wash his hands” off a party in which he had spent his entire political career.
He made the announcement at the party headquarters here yesterday following a two-hour meeting with representatives of 33 SUPP branches, who pledged their support for him. SUPP has 43 branches statewide.
However, Chin refused to confirm whether his rumoured running mate, SUPP treasurer Datuk David Teng, would join him.
His wide support, comprising almost all the northern and southern branches, will leave the other confirmed SUPP presidency contender, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, in the cold.
Wong had told reporters on Saturday that he, along with Senadin branch chairman Datuk Lee Kim Chin from the northern region, would not pull out. Wong was not contactable for his immediate reaction to Chin’s claim of strong support. At a press conference here, Chin reiterated that he had “no ready team”.
He also said, while he wanted to head the party, the question of whether an open contest would arise was still unconfirmed.
“Whether there is a party election or not, I leave it to the events that will come.”
Chin said the show of support he had received in the last few days meant it would be inappropriate for him to “shy away from the responsibility”.
“I’ve worked with my comrades for so many years. I accept this responsibility to lead the party for the next few years,” Chin said during the 10-minute press conference.
“The grassroots leaders here were called at very short notice, and they came on their own free will. That’s something I appreciate. I thank them for their enthusiasm. With) this sort of attendance, how can you refuse?”
Seated next to Chin was his rumoured running mate Teng.
Teng said he was “not at all involved” or willing to stand.
“I’m here (at the meeting) because we (Chin and I) share common ground,” Teng said, when asked if he would be Chin’s number two in the party election scheduled for December.
“My job is finished,” he said.
Pressed further for comments, Teng replied: “It’s not me.”
To another question on whether he was definitely out and would not spring a surprise closer to the election, Teng said: “I myself am not interested. He’s (Chin) the guy talking today.”
Taking the question, Chin again insisted that he had “no ready team”.
“What is the use of having a ready team at this point? The delegates have the final say. At the end of the day, the delegates are the ones choosing the Central Committee, and then the Central Committee chooses the Central Working Committee,” he said.
Chin, who is the Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, admitted to reporters that he had met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak last week.
He was circumspect on the meeting.
“Yes I did (meet him). I don’t need to get his (Najib’s) permission, by the way.” He also confirmed that he had spoken to current party president Tan Sri Dr George Chan.
However, he said that Dr Chan would not need to give his blessings to anybody.
“He (Dr Chan) is leaving the stage. It’s up to the present party branches to see who is more suitable. I can’t say what I’ve talked about to them in private, just like I also had some conversations with Lee (Kim Shin), but I can’t divulge.”
The SUPP president-hopeful pledged to transform the party “so that, in the future, people will support SUPP and not support the DAP”.
On whether he would stand in the next general election, Chin said he was undecided.
A total 306 representatives from the 33 branches attended yesterday’s meeting at the Saati Hall in the headquarters.
Most of them began arriving after 4pm, with Chin arriving together with SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sim Kheng Hui at 5pm sharp.
Teng had walked in moments earlier.
It took the trio some 10 minutes to reach the front of the hall, where they were seated along with Chin’s political secretary Datuk Sebastian Ting, SUPP Kuching branch chairman Datuk Lily Yong, Kota Sentosa branch chairman Datuk Alfred Yap and SUPP Youth chief Sih Hua Tong, among others.
None of the four bumiputra elected representatives, who on Saturday pledged their support for Wong, were present.
They are Dr Jerip Susil (Bengoh assemblyman), Ranum Mina (Opar), Johnical Rayong Ngipa (Engkilili) and Datuk Francis Harden Hollis (Simanggang).

PETER CHIN SET TO LEAD SUPP

PETER CHIN vs SOON KOH
OVERWHELMING SUPPORT: Chin (centre) shakes hands with his supporters after a closed-door meeting which saw the support of 32 out of 42 SUPP branches.
Miri MP claims 32 out of 42 branches behind him in race for party presidency
KUCHING: The coming SUPP triennial delegates’ conference (TDC) will likely see a straight fight between deputy secretary-general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and organising secretary Datuk Seri Peter Chin for the presidency.
Chin, who is Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, yesterday confirmed that he will be contesting for the top post as he has the support of 32 of the party’s 42 branches.
Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development, announced his candidacy on Oct 9 in Sibu where he, among others, said he had the support of many branches in northern, southern and central Sarawak.
Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting with 310 SUPP branch leaders, Chin said his decision to contest during
the TDC, which will be held from Dec 9-11, was prompted by the large show of support for him.
“I have been persuaded by all these comrades that I have worked with for so many years, especially in my role as organising secretary.
“They felt that it is appropriate for me to accept this challenge rather than to shy away from this responsibility. Hence, I accept this responsibility to lead this party,” said Chin, who is Miri Member of Parliament.
The 10 branches which did not send any representatives to the meeting yesterday were Bengoh, Telang Usan, Sibu, Senadin, Opar, Mukah, Kapit, Kanowit, Belaga and Baram.
He said he now felt it was not right for him to wash his hands off and retire when expectations were running high within the party for him to succeed Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan.
Dr Chan, who is a former deputy chief minister, would not be seeking re-election.
He made known his intention after he lost in his stronghold of Piasau to a DAP political novice in the April 16 state election.
Chin told the packed press conference at the party headquarters here that he had already spoken to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak regarding his decision to contest for the party president’s post.
Asked whether he has the support of Dr Chan, Chin replied that he had spoken to him before the meeting yesterday, but won’t divulge the details.
“Well, I think I better not disclose it. I think it is for you to ask him (Dr Chan).
“I would also not like to disclose any conversation I had with Datuk Lee Kim Shin (Senadin assemblyman who has teamed up with Wong to contest as secretary-general),” he said.
Asked about speculations that he would team up with party treasurer Datuk David Teng, Chin said he had not formed a team yet.
“What is the point of forming a team when at the end of the day it is the duty of the delegates at the TDC to decide who leads the party,” he said.
Teng, who was also present at the press conference, commented that he was not interested in the presidency but would leave his fate to the delegates to decide.
Meanwhile, in a press statement issued to reporters covering the meeting yesterday, Chin’s camp said they would like to put their hearts together to take the party forward from the setbacks suffered in the 2006 and 2011 state elections.
The statement included three of the party’s focus and they are:
The party must always come first. Every party member and its leaders, at all levels, must abide by and implement the policies of the party central.
We must strengthen our party discipline. The members of the disciplinary committee should comprise party elders who are not members of the central committee.
We must groom a team of second echelon leaders to take over this `Transformation Team’ who will retire in two or three years’ time.
They added that certain provisions of the party’s constitution should be amended to, among others, include the setting up of a Council of Elders.
“We must go all out to recruit more Bumiputera members to make SUPP a truly multi-racial party in Sarawak,” they stated.

PETER CHIN SILENT ON RACE FOR SUPP PRESIDENT POST
MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) organising secretary and Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui is keeping mum on speculation that the party’s southern branches would meet in Kuching today to endorse him to run for president at the Triennial Delegates Conference in December.
Chin is also expected to team up with party treasurer Datuk David Teng Lung Chi to take on the team of deputy secretary-general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and Senadin Branch chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
Chin, however, said party unity should be the uppermost consideration and appealed to all party members, including those in his Miri-Sibuti liaison parliamentary committee to refrain from any action or words which could jeopardise unity.
Speaking at a the meet-the-people session at the SUPP office here yesterday, he urged the public and press not to speculate, but confirmed that he would be meeting representatives from branches in Kuching and some from central and northern Sarawak today.
“They ask to meet and I don’t know what they are going to say, so wait until after the meeting,” he said.
He kept mum on what would be on the agenda or the likely outcome, saying he did not rule out the possibility of not agreeing to what the southern SUPP branches might want him to do.
“The meeting is not my own doing or request, as it these leaders and representatives who want to meet me and as organising secretary, I don’t see it wrong to meet and listen to what they have to say,” he added.
Wong and Lee , the two Barisan Nasional Chinese surviving candidates in the last state election, had declared their readiness to lead the party following defeat of party president Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan Hong Nam.
Chin had hinted his desire to let younger leaders take over and prominent businessman Hii King Chiong had publicly declared his intention to lead Piasau SUPP branch which is headed by Dr Chan.
Chin also declined to comment on whether he would be contesting against Hii in Piasau branch, saying unity was his foremost concern in the party and in the SUPP Miri-Sibuti liaison parliamentary committee.
Chin is also expected to team up with party treasurer Datuk David Teng Lung Chi to take on the team of deputy secretary-general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and Senadin Branch chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Friday, 14 October 2011 07:00

SUPP Piasau Youth chief declares support for Hii
Prominent businessman eyes SUPP Piasau top post
by Philip Kiew & Chin Kee Leong. Posted on October 13, 2011, Thursday
MIRI: Prominent businessman and philanthropist Hii King Chiong yesterday announced his decision to go for the
SUPP Piasau chairman post during branch elections next month.
Hii King Chiong
The present chairman of SUPP Piasau, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, announced he was stepping down shortly after he was defeated by a DAP political novice Alan Ling Sie Kiong during the April 16 state election.
Prior to the election, Dr Chan, who is also SUPP chairman, was holding the following portfolios – Deputy Chief Minister, Minister of Industrial Development, and Minister of Tourism and Heritage.
In a statement to party comrades and made available to the press, Hii said he was inspired by calls from loyal members and supporters that the party must be united and that urgent and speedy reforms were badly needed.
“The support from the various grassroots units,
from within and outside the party, has inspired my decision to contest for the chairmanship post. I seek to confront all difficulties with reinforced strength and collaboration with leaders of other party branches,” he said.
Hii, who is the group managing director of the Kingwood Group of Companies, and executive chairman of Fonsen Timber Sdn Bhd, is involved in diversified business activities including construction, timber, and plantation.
SUPP Piasau Youth chief declares support for Hii
The chorus of support for him to helm SUPP Piasau gathered momentum in recent months.
On Sept 30, SUPP Piasau Youth chief Keith Chin declared his support for Hii to run for the chairman post during a press conference in Mega Hotel.
The branch’s deputy chairman is political secretary to the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Sebastian Ting, who was tipped to contest in the Miri constituency in the next general election.
Hii revealed that he was not jumping into the political fray empty handed. In fact, he said, he already had a detailed plan under his sleeve.
“I have a detailed plan to allow all levels of people – the elderly, the middle-aged, and the younger generation, to break free from the paternalistic way of doing things and to allow them (people) the freedom to make nominations and have the freedom to choose their own leaders,” he said.
Hii added that he relished facing difficulties ahead, and would work closely with party leaders in order to help rejuvenate the party with honour and integrity.
“Despite the harsh criticisms on the streets and from within that SUPP is on the verge of political bankruptcy, we, the younger generation, sees an earnest hope for revival. We will not bicker about the political circus that is happening within and outside our party,” he stressed. Hii made it clear that accusations hurled against the younger generation for being too aggressive in trying to wrest power would not break their beliefs that SUPP has “good, honest roots and ideals”.
The younger generation of leaders, he said, was very focused on restoring the party by returning authority to party members.
On the conundrum that some party leaders were against active participation of entrepreneurs in the party but at the same time welcomed big corporations to come in to provide financial aid, Hii said the younger generation viewed it as “a paradox”.
“We cannot deny that development and prosperity in any given place is always driven by the private sector. Likewise, it also applies to our party, and we have to foster a good relationship with entrepreneurs and respect their contributions to the society,” he reasoned.
SUPP, he said, must reform to win back the confidence of the voters, or face “disastrous consequences”.
Appealing to party members to allow him and the reform-centric team to be elected, he said their mission was to save the party and serve the people and society more effectively.
“We (SUPP) might have lost some battles, but we have not lost the war,” he pointed out.
With only Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and Datuk Lee Kim Shin representing the Chinese community in the State Cabinet, Hii said the party must strengthen its political participation, maintain good relations with all BN component parties, share political authority, and be dignified leaders with regards to the livelihood of the people, educational rights, and land matters.
