KUCHING: About 50 members of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Batu Kawa branch are to jump ship to join the People’s Progressive Party.
According to a source, who is among those who have decided to join PPP, many of the party members are disillusioned with the party branch leaders.
“The leaders do not seem to know their limit for politicking … almost every issue is being politicised by
them which is not good for the party,” said the source.
The source added he and few PBB members would seek a meeting with the PPP state chairman John Lau to discuss their intention of joining the party.
“If PPP wants us to resign from PBB first before joining them, we are willing to do so,” said the source.

BN told to be more aggressive in facing opposition

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Barisan Nasional (BN) can no longer be defensive when facing Opposition parties which were more aggresive when displaying its deeds to the public.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said the opposition liked to use Penang and Selangor as examples of their success, especially concerning welfare but forgot that the performances of Kelantan and Kedah were unsatisfactory.
He said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was proud of the allocation of RM100 a year for senior citizens when the federal government set aside RM300 a month to the poor to the tune of RM440 million a year.
He said, since taking over the administration of
Penang and Selangor, the opposition had not implemented low-cost housing projects to help the poor in the states.
“In terms of promotion, they are indeed competent, but in terms of working, they have a lot to improve upon,” he told reporters after opening the Terengganu MCA Youth/Wanita Convention 2011 here yesterday.
In this context, Dr Chua said MCA leaders must explain to the grassroots what the BN government did, and not just something which was carried out only during an election, in the interest the people.
He said the party was ready to face the 13th General Election and had mobilised its machinery nationwide.
“We are confident of the Chinese support for MCA but this differs in certain areas where the voters also evaluate the candidates, and not just the party,” he said. — Bernama

Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui : Retired
Chin to step down as SUPP organising secretary
Posted on July 26, 2011, Tuesday
KUCHING: Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui confirmed yesterday that he would relinquish his post as organising secretary of SUPP during the party’s triennial delegates’ conference end of this year.
“I will not hold on to that post. However, I will continue at branch level,” said the SUPP Bekenu branch chairman.
On whether he would seek re-election in the 13th general election, the Miri MP said he had yet to make up his mind.
He was, however, quick to point out that there would be no shortage of capable successors should he decide to call it a day after the current term.
“I have not really given it a thought. When the right time comes, I will make a call. But following the recent spate of speculations on elections, I may announce some news soon. To be honest, many people have been working closely with me and if I do retire soon, a lot of young people can take over from me anytime. There isn’t any problem,” he told reporters after attending a function here yesterday.
Chin who is Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water has been Miri MP since 1990. His comrade, SUPP vice-president and five-time Stampin MP Datuk Yong Khoon Seng announced his decision not to seek re-election in the 13th general election some time last year. He presently holds the post of Deputy Minister of Works.
SUPP has five MPs. The others are Datuk Richard Riot Jaem (Serian), Ding Kuong Hiing (Sarikei) and Datuk Tiong Thai King (Lanang).

SUPP needs a face-lift, fast

Party must move out to create an impact by working with the people and helping them resolve problems
GATHERING STRENGTH: Dr Chan (centre) leading party leaders in a symbolic summons of unity with the shouts of Sa’ati at Sibu SUPP Branch yesterday. From left are Chin, Wong, and Law.
SIBU: SUPP deputy secretary Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has called on the party to undertake “thorough restructuring” in order to regain its political might.
Speaking at the statewide tour of the Central Working Committee (CWC) here yesterday, Wong, who is also the party’s Sibu Branch head, said this was necessary to rejuvenate the party to win back the support of the people.
He said the party must move out to create an impact by working with the people and helping them resolve problems.
“We must view this urgently. We must create a new image based on the aspirations and needs of the people. We must rise again.”
The CWC visit to Sibu was the first stop among the major branches in the state after the party suffered heavy losses in the April 16 polls.
It contested in 19 constituencies but lost 13 of them. Out of the six it managed to retain, only two were predominantly Chinese seats and the rest Bumiputera areas.
Meeting the CWC leaders, led by party president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, were representatives from the 16 units of Sibu branch and leaders from Mukah, Kanowit, Bintangor, Dalat and Kapit. Absent were representatives from Song, Julau and Sarikei branches.
Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister and Minister of Environment and Public Health, said what he was suggesting was just preliminary, and the party must study it to introduce the measures.
He, however, stressed that it must be done fast.
The restructuring must involve significant improvement in administration, including a complete system that could shape the party’s organisation.
“We must promptly pump in new blood to give the party a young look.”
He also suggested that issues involving transparency, professionalism and democracy must be looked at.
“There must be a way for better communication between the members and the leaders.
There must also be a better and closer relationship among branch leaders and with party members.” Wong also called for the setting up of a SUPP Foundation, but he did not elaborate on this.
He merely said there must be an efficient management of finance for the party.
He also touched on the need to be a people-first party and resolve land lease-related issues.
“Land matter is important because it concerns the livelihood of every citizen. We must work with the people and give the matter priority attention.”
He said education was another area where the people needed help, like in matters pertaining to Chinese education, the setting up of a foundation to help poor students and matters related to entries into universities.
“There is also a need to help Chinese youths to get into the civil service and get loans for them from the federal government to help set up small and medium scale industries, etc.”
Other problems that Wong listed out were those related to security, welfare for the aged and juvenile delinquency.

KULIM: The Higher Education Ministry has decided not to interfere and let university administrations decide what action to take on students who were involved in the Bersih rally in Kuala Lumpur on July 9.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said any action to be taken on the students needed to follow the laws and regulations of their respective universities.
“The ministry will leave it to the universities to determine the appropriate punishment and I will wait for their reports,” he told reporters after a certificate and diploma presentation ceremony at the Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah Kulim Polytechnic’s (PTSB) 6th convocation, here yesterday.
Mohamed Khaled was asked to comment on reports that 21 students from several institutions of higher learning were arrested by police during the illegal rally.
Of the number, 14 were students from public institutions of higher learning including two from polytechnics and one from the International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM).
Seven others were from private universities, including a student from Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor (KUIS) and two students studying in Egypt. — Bernama

“How many times has Anwar lied to us?
State leaders say the PKR de-facto leader is day dreaming, and always has been
KUCHING: PKR’s prediction that they can win at least 15 seats in Sarawak in the 13th general election has been described as nothing more than a ‘day dream’.
Chief Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said he was not surprised by PKR de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s grandiose boast because it is his (Anwar) worthless signature tune.
“How many times has Anwar lied to us? He is a day dreamer. After the
12th general election in 2008, Anwar mentioned that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) would form the government by Sept 16, 2008 as BN MPs would be joining them. In the end, nothing materialised.
“Before the recent state election, Anwar also claimed that PR would win and even endorsed Baru Bian (state PKR chairman) as the next Chief Minister. In the end, nothing materialised.
“This prediction that they would win 15 parliament seats is nothing new. It’s Anwar and his dreams again,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Abdul Karim, who is also Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) chairman, Asajaya assemblyman and PBB Supreme Council member, was asked to comment on Anwar’s latest remarks when he came here last weekend.
During a gathering with PKR members and supporters from the Bidayuh community at a restaurant in Siburan last Saturday, Anwar said PKR would be committed towards winning at least 15 seats in Sarawak in its quest to enable PR to form the next government.
Anwar said the figure included the predominantly-Bidayuh constituency of Mambong.
“If we can win 15 seats in Sarawak, it will be a ‘home run’ for us (to win the election). That is why we must win in Mambong and in the other urban and rural areas.”
The gathering took place for about two hours, before Anwar left for two more functions in Kuching. Also present were PKR national vice president Datuk John Tenewi Nuek, Baru and state PKR information chief See Chee How.
Presently, PKR does not have any parliamentary seat in Sarawak. In the 10th state election, they contested in 49 seats and won three.
Meanwhile, PBB vice president Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, who echoed Abdul Karim’s sentiments, said Anwar was “still in dreamland”.
He pointed out that PKR also spoke with a similar air of arrogance before the April 16 state polls when it predicted that it could romp home with 40 seats.
“In the last state election he (Anwar) said PKR could win 40 seats but you see what had happened,” said the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) and Tupong assemblyman.

Yellow attire okay but no Bersih logo, says deputy IGP

Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar
NILAI: There is no harm in wearing yellow attire but it should not have the logo of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) printed on it, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar said.
He said the Home Ministry had declared Bersih an illegal organisation and that police were obliged to carry out their responsibility in enforcing the law.
“In fact you can wear anything yellow, even yellow socks or hat, but without the logo in support of an illegal organisation,” he told a media conference after launching the Community Policing Scheme and Crime Awareness Team (CAT) at Nilai Square here Saturday night.
Also present were Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh and his deputy Datuk Abd Manan Mohd Hassan.
Khalid said if any party was not happy with the restriction they could bring up the matter to the court.
“Whatever the court decides the police will abide,” he said.
On the establishment of CAT, he said, it was a programme to enlist the help of young people in the police’s crime prevention agenda and to enhance the people’s confidence about their safety.
The cooperation and involvement of the young people in CAT, which is under the Youth and Sports Department’s Rakan Muda programme, would enable various crime prevention activities to be organised from time to time, he added. – Bernama

813: A Walk for democracy and reforms
Movement plans ‘red-shirt’ rally Aug 13
Posted on July 14, 2011, Thursday
KUCHING: Movement for Change Sarawak (MoCS) plans to hold a rally ‘A walk for democracy and reforms’, here on Aug 13 from 2pm to 5pm here and participants are encouraged to wear red T-shirts.
MoCS leader Francis Siah said the movement’s leaders had decided to tone down the event — originally planned as a protest against Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Taib to walk for democracy and reforms after a meeting in Kuala Lumpur recently.
He said MoCS would apply for a police permit for the event and assured the police that the rally would be peaceful.
Siah added the organisers would heed any reasonable advice and conditions from the police and extend its fullest cooperation to all law enforcement agencies.
“We hope to gather either at Padang Merdeka or Kuching Waterfront and then walk to either Reservoir Park or Museum Grounds where we will hold the rally.
“By 5pm, everyone should disperse. This is our commitment to the police,” he said.
The movement will issue a 10-point declaration at the rally.
MoCS stressed that the rally was solely a citizen’s initiative with no political affiliation or involvement.
Siah stressed that MoCS would not campaign for support from any established groups for the rally as they preferred spontaneous and voluntary support from those who earnestly wanted to help bring about genuine reforms.
MoCS also encouraged those who would not be able to come here and those living in other parts of the state to organise similar walks in solidarity with the movement.

BERUK DAN TUAN BERUK (RAKYAT DAN KERAJAAN)

AL KISAH……
Beruk nie memang terkenal dengan perangai nakalnya..tak boleh duduk diam, namun Tuan nya(kerajaan) tetap sayangkannya di sebabkan nak suruh panjat pokok ambil kelapa. Bawak beruk jalan naik motor 1st class dok di raga depan. Satu hari, beruk nie memulas throttle minyak ketika motor sedang berjalan….akibatnya mereka pun accident langgar kereta.
Beberapa hari kemudian selepas Tuannya keluar hospital, sayang punya pasai, Tuan nya masih bawak lagi beruk nie jalan-jalan, cuma this time dok di belakang la.Oleh sebab perangai semulajadi beruk nie yg nakal ,kali nie Si beruk memusing helmet dan menutup muka tuannya.
MORAL OF THE STORY- Kerajaan sayangkan rakyat walaupun beberapa kali di sabotaj semasa pilihanraya, namun masih di beri keistimewaan. Pilihlah sewajarnya semasa PRU 13 nanti. BN SEMESTINYA..
Sedegil mana beruk, tuan nya tetap menyayangi nya walaupun pada awalnya tuan beruk marah atau memukulnya kerana kedegilan beruk. Namun demikian, kata pepatah pukul dibadanmu, sakit dihati ku...

Few Words and Encouragement from Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin

Muhyiddin stresses federal government will keep all election promises to Sarawak
BETONG: The federal government will honour all promises made to the state in the recent state election, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said in his speech at the national-level Gawai Dayak open house held at Rumah Wilson Begat Bakir in Penom, Ulu Paku here yesterday.
“We have promised to develop the state’s infrastructure and economy. We will fulfill all promises made by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak himself, myself and all cabinet ministers.” Muhyiddin added that the cabinet had appointed the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas to go through the list of projects promised.
“Uggah will go through the lists, look at the cost, decides the priority and when to call for tenders and other details. As a matter of fact some of these projects are currently being implemented,” he said.
Muhyiddin added that the government was serious about transforming the government and the country economy.
“Our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has initiated programmes like the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
“We will hold roadshows to explain and promote these throughout the country so that the people especially those outside the feFderal capital will know them better especially, effects and impacts to them,” he said.
Muhyiddin also called on the people to remain united to ensure peace and security in the country and took to task a small minority of the people in the country who disregarded the laws, the constitution, the King and the majority of Malaysians who wanted peace.
“They had taken to the street to demonstrate despite being repeatedly told not to do so as their actions would cause hardship and inconveniences to others.
They demonstrated because they wanted a fair and clean election but the opposition managed to win 16 seats out of the 71 in the last state election and this proved that our election had been fair and transparent, he said.
On the Gawai Dayak festival, Muhyiddin said it was not just a mere celebration based on belief or religion but one that was enjoyed by all Malaysians.
He also agreed with Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim’s earlier suggestion that traditional longhouses more than 50 years old be declared national heritage buildings.
“However, longhouse chiefs and the residents must first agree to the suggestion,” he said.
Meanwhile, the deputy prime minister announced the approval of a RM350,000 fund for the construction of the SIB church in Betong, and another sum of RM4.5million for a conservation and breeding programme involving the ‘terubok’ fish at five locations.
He also announced that 900 1Malaysia netbooks would be distributed to deserving students in the Betong parliamentary constituency.
About 3,000 people attended the Gawai celebration and among them were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, Minister of Information, Communication and Culture Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim, Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Uggah.

Maverick politician Hii Tiong Huat
Politician Hii Tiong Huat released from detention minus yellow shirt

FREEDOM AT LAST: Hii Tiong Huat (file photo) is released from detention but without his yellow shirt and shoes.
SIBU: Maverick politician Hii Tiong Huat was finally released from detention in Kuala Lumpur yesterday evening.
Hii was arrested wearing the yellow Bersih T-shirt in Kuala Lumpur on the eve of the Bersih rally last Friday.
While he walked out a free man from Dang Wangi police station the fate of his yellow T-shirt remains unknown.
Malaysia Election Observers Network (MEONet) coordinator Ong Boon Keong, who picked Hii up at the police station, laughed when he related to The Borneo Post Hii’s enforced change of attire.
“He is released alright, but the police detained his yellow T-shirt. So, Hii walked out a free man wearing a purple shirt from the police cell.”
Ong said the police would only release his shirt today.
At press time, Ong was looking for a shirt for Hii. He said the police also kept Hii’s shoes.
“Now, Hii is barefooted as well.” He said he would arrange for his overnight stay in the national capital.
“Tomorrow, Hii will pick up his yellow T-shirt and shoes.
I believe he will head home from there. He is not charged.” The MEO-Net coordinator said he had already met Hii yesterday at 10am.
“He was well and in high spirit. In the 15 minutes’ talk, he told me about how he wanted to sue the police for putting him in a cell not fit for humans.”
The arrest of Hii has remained mysterious.
Even Asian Forum For Human Rights and Development reported the 60-year-old lone politician missing.
After his arrest last Friday, Hii was detained at the Bukit Jalil Police Station and investigated under the Societies Act 1966.
“While in detention, he refused to have his statement taken. He wanted to speak to a lawyer first, but he was not given the privilege.”
He said his statement was finally taken on Monday.
Ong said he had kept Hii’s wife informed of her husband’s movement.
The MEO-Net man said after the video of Hii’s arrest was posted in the Internet, the popularity of the ‘lone-ranger’ politician soared.
“Our 13-minute video was viewed 270,000 times and it received about 2,000 comments.”
He said when news of his detention spread, there were people who brought food to the police station for him. Ong yesterday also brought in breakfast for Hii.
He brought him nasi lemak, steamed buns and others.
Back home here the locals are resigned to putting up with his eccentricities when he got back, especially his nightly drive in a van into crowded areas and honking for attention as he waved to the crowd.
On top of his van is a signboard of Gawai Dayak greeting and words introducing him as an independent candidate of Lanang parliamentary constituency for the coming General Election.
Meanwhile, after The Borneo Post published Hii’s page in the Facebook yesterday, more people have visited it.
From Monday noon 106 people “liked” it and the number hiked to 291 “likes” by 6.30pm yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police yesterday arrested several political leaders and rally organisers including Datuk S Ambiga, who is the chairman of the outlawed group, Bersih, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for going ahead with yesterday’s rallies.
According to the police in their Facebook page, two vice-presidents of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Fuziah Salleh and Tian Chua, were also arrested for taking part in the illegal rallies.
They were picked up at KL Sentral station as they were about to join the rallies.
PAS deputy presidents, Datuk Mahfuz Omar and Salahuddin Ayub, were also arrested earlier at the same place for the same reason.
PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, meanwhile, was arrested in Jalan Mahameru.
PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was also at KL Sentral.
Khairy was leading a rally, by the group known as Patriot, in Jalan Bukit Bintang when he was apprehended by police alongside Umno supreme council member Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.
In his tweet, Khairy said Umno Youth executive council member, Datuk Ahmad Zaki Zahid, was hurt when police fired tear gas at them.
He tweeted at about 4pm: “Have been taken to Pulapol. FRU tear gas straight at us. Exco @zakizahid hurt.”
Police said, 924 people were arrested as at 5.30pm, 49 of them women.
Demonstrators gathered at various locations in the capital city from noon yesterday in defiance of police orders, forcing the police to fire tear gas and water cannons to disperse them.
The locations include Dataran Merdeka, Pasar Seni, Jalan Hang Kasturi, Maybank Tower, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Petaling and KL Sentral.
Police said security personnel had repeatedly ordered them to disperse but were ignored.
Several shops around Bukit Bintang were closed due to the rallies but reopened at 3.30pm when police put the situation under control.
Meanwhile, Datuk Abdul Rahman Abu Bakar, the deputy president of the Malay right-wing group, Perkasa, said the group abided by the orders of the authorities.
“We were supposed to take part in the rally but Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali received orders from the police asking the buses carrying our members from Johor Baharu, Pahang, Perak, Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan, to turn back,” he said.
He said Perkasa decided not to go ahead with its planned rally because it did not want to create trouble. — Bernama

Anwar the mastermind behind illegal rally – PM
Posted on July 11, 2011, Monday
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is an opportunist who was the mastermind in organising the illegal rally on Saturday, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister described the illegal rally organised by the outlawed group, Bersih 2.0, as a desperate plan by the opposition leader to manipulate the people to gain their support.
Najib, who is also the Umno president, said Anwar’s position was affected by the growing support of the people for the government following the various economic development policies that had been implemented.
Addressing 6,000 people who attended a briefing session at the Putra World Trade Centre, here yesterday, he said the member of parliament for Permatang Pauh was prepared to sacrifice his principles and put aside religion and race as long as he achieved his dream of becoming prime minister.
“He knows that if he does not do anything, we (the Barisan Nasional) will win in the 13th general election.
“This is the last chance for him. When people know that this is their last chance, they will do everything, good or bad,” he said.
Najib, who is also the BN chairman, said Anwar deliberately wanted to bring down the country’s image and show to the world that Malaysia was not democratic and instead tried to portray himself as a good person.
“This negative attitude has never changed from before until now,” he said. — Bernama

Change LOGO (BERSIH to UBAH) hmm...
DAP reps used ‘Ubah’ to support Bersih’s cause
Posted on July 10, 2011, Sunday
KUCHING: The Sarawak DAP’s breakfast session here in connection with the Bersih 2.0 rally yesterday turned out to be a calm one.
The hour-long gathering saw the party release a 3-page declaration for clean, free and fair elections for Bersih 2.0, which the federal government had pronounced unlawful.
All its 12 elected representatives donned yellow shirts but not with the ‘Bersih 2.0’ words. Imprinted was the party’s famous mascot ‘Ubah’.
All in all only about 30 persons wore yellow shirts during the session in a coffee shop at Stutong Commercial Centre here.
Before 8.30am, some members of the public wearing yellow-coloured shirts filled part of the outlet while police in plainclothes were said to be among the so-called breakfast goers.
Members of the Special Branch were also dispatched to observe the gathering while a chopper rotated a few times before 10.30am.
A middle-aged man, who refused to be identified, claimed that it was the first time he witnessed such a gathering, which called for free and fair elections.
He felt it was imperative for some quarters to initiate efforts to “clean up the current election system.”
“It has been so many years that we endured the system. All we want is electoral reforms and, in fact, the Barisan Nasional can do it but are they doing anything about it?” quipped the man.
A couple of officers in plainclothes told the press that anyone caught wearing yellow shirt with ‘Bersih 2.0’ would be nabbed right away.
Among the declaration points, said state DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng, was to call on the Election Commission to address unfair constituency delineation.
“Some state constituencies are four to five times bigger than others, and some parliamentary seats are more than 10 times bigger than others,” pointed out the Sibu MP and Bukit Assek assemblyman.
In Sarawak, Wong said Ba’Kelalan recorded 6,958 voters while Pending had 29,488.
“The BN won 25 constituencies with less than 10,000 voters in each of them, and 10 seats won by the DAP came with voters exceeding 20,000.”
He stressed that a distorted and unbalanced weightage meant unfair representation.
A check with the April 16 election results confirmed the disparity. Kuching, Pending, Batu Lintang, Kota Sentosa, Padungan, Batu Kawah registered over 20,000 voters each while Satok and Demak Laut had 10,431 and 10,437 voters respectively.
For the central region, Bawang Assan had 16,743 voters while Bukit Assek, Dudong and Pelawan registered over 26,000 voters.
In Miri, whilst both Pujut and Senadin recorded more than 22,000 voters, Bekenu and Piasau had only 10,672 and 16,600 respectively.
Wong asserted that the media must remain neutral and be a bastion in upholding democracy.
“But the repressive requirement to renew publication licences annually and BN control means the media had little choice but to resort to unbalanced reporting against the opposition during election time.
“In some newspapers, there had even been a total blackout of news on Pakatan Rakyat during elections.”

Nabbed for wearing yellow ‘Bersih 2.0’ t-shirt

MIRI: A man was arrested by police for wearing a yellow t-shirt bearing the word ‘Bersih 2.0’.
Miri police chief ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim who confirmed the arrest yesterday said the man was arrested near a restaurant at Jalan Permaisuri here around 12.45pm.
The man, believed local, was brought to the central police station for further investigation and detention.
“We are going to investigate the offence which comes under the Society Act 1966. The suspect is likely to be charged under Section 47 of Society Act 1966 for promoting ‘Bersih 2.0’, an illegal society by wearing the t-shirt,” Jamaluddin told thesundaypost when approached at the Central Police Station here yesterday.
He said the remand order would be obtained from the court.
The suspect was the second person to be arrested and detained by police for wearing the Bersih t-shirt.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth secretary Zulhaidah Suboh was arrested on Monday on her arrival at Miri Airport from Kuching.
Zulhaidah faces two charges under Section 47 of the Society Act 1966 (Act 335) for displaying and promoting the rally by wearing the t-shirt and possessing two of them.
The 38-year-old aspiring politician claimed trial on both charges and was ordered by Miri Magistrate’s Court to be released on RM4,000 bail each with one surety.
The offences call for a jail term of not more than two years or fine of not more than RM5,000 or both upon conviction.
Although the situation in Miri is under control and orderly, they would still be monitoring it, Jamaluddin said.
“Action will be taken against those joining and organising the rally or gathering. We will be monitoring the situation to ensure there will be no illegal assembly or rally,” he added.
Police personnel were deployed in the commercial area along Jalan Permaisuri here yesterday.
Until yesterday, the police did not receive any application to hold a ‘Bersih 2.0’ gathering.
Meanwhile, Miri PKR chief Dr Michael Teo accompanied by Zulhaidah and party supporters took part in a walkabout to show their support for the reason ‘Bersih 2.0’ was held.

Bersih’s illegal rally fails to muster support
Posted on July 10, 2011, Sunday
KUALA LUMPUR: The illegal street demonstration planned in the city yesterday by outlawed group ‘Bersih 2.0’ led by Datuk S Ambiga failed to garner support from the people as only some 10,000 people turned up for it instead of the 100,000 people the group had targetted.
According to political analyst Dr Sivamurugan Pandian, the lack of support could have been due to the people realising that the group was not sincere in its stated objective of calling for electoral reform but instead the illegal assembly was more politically motivated.
He said besides this, careful preparation by the police in facing the illegal assembly also prevented any untowards incidents from happening.
“If it was really the case (Bersih 2.0 championing electoral reform), more people would have backed the group. However, it was the opposite. This was markedly different from the ‘reformasi’ illegal street demonstrations of 1998 and the Hindraf and Bersih rallies in 2007 which received widespread support,” he said when contacted by Bernama.
The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) political science lecturer from Penang, who has been in the federal capital since Wednesday to follow developments and see for himself how the rally would turn out, said the failure of the illegal assembly was also very much due to the police’s strategic actions to “check the group”.
He also said the strategy adopted by Bersih 2.0 to move in small groups from several locations in the city to their targeted venue (the Merdeka Stadium), was aimed at making their numbers look bigger than they actually were.
“I have to admit the strategy was very effective. The truth is, I hardly saw any Chinese among the demonstrators, most seemed to be PAS members,” he said, adding that Bersih 2.0 also failed create the “yellow wave” it had aimed to achieve as the police succeeded in confiscating yellow T-shirts with the word ‘Bersih’ on them, which were banned by the authorities, ahead of and during the illegal assembly yesterday.
Bersih 2.0 also admitted that it failed to meet its objective of handing over a memorandum to call for electoral reform to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday.
Its steering committee posted on its website www.bersih.org :”We will make appropriate arrangements to deliver the memorandum when the police have calmed down”.
“Yesterday’s gathering is not the end, it is but one more step in the long walk for clean and fair elections in Malaysia. The campaign continues, to work for electoral reform, the release of all detainees and an end to harassment by the authorities,” it said. — Bernama

FUYOO! A 'HOUSEWIFE" WANT TO CHALLENGE THE GOVERNMENT
PKR Youth sec charged with possessing, displaying ‘Bersih’ T-shirt
Posted on July 8, 2011, Friday
MIRI: The Youth secretary of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Zulhaidah Suboh was yesterday charged in the magistrates’ court with two offences under Society Act 1966.
The case attracted supporters from the opposition parties who came together with Zulhaidah family members.
Also present were Pujut assemblyman Fung Pau Teck and PKR Miri chief Michael Teo.
Wearing an orange T-shirt with ‘Justice First — Truth Now and 1Mongolia’ printed on the back and black jeans, Zulhaidah waved and smiled to her father Hadie @ Suboh Salleh, mother and husband who were among the crowd as police escorted her to the dock.
The 38-year-old aspiring politician was charged with possessing two pieces of T-shirt printed with ‘Bersih 2.0’ wordings and displaying by wearing T-shirt with ‘Bersih 2.0’ printed on it.
Both offences under Section 47 of Society Act 1966 (Act 335) prescribed jail sentence of not more than two years or fine of not more than RM5,000 or both upon conviction.
Before magistrate Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, she pleaded not guilty to both charges.
As she claimed trial, deputy public prosecutor Yaacub Haji Chik requested for the accused to be released on bail of RM5,000 with one surety for each charge.
Yaacub in his application contended that the amount must not be low as there was possibility that the accused may abscond and that she might take it lightly and attend court hearing at later stage.
Apart from that, the accused might commit the same offence in the future.
The large amount of bail will secure her attendance at the trial.
The accused’s counsel Piasau assemblyman Ling Sie Kiong said the bail amount of RM5,000 requested by Yaacub was too excessive as Section 47 of Society Act 1966 (Act 335) prescribed a fine of not more than RM5,000 upon conviction.
Ling said that the bail should not be a punishment for the accused.
On the ground that Zulhaidah might abscond, Ling said the chances were slim as she is a well-known figure in Miri for she had contested in the recent state election.
In a lighter note, Ling said his client is now becoming more famous and well known with the case.
She also has no criminal records prior to the case.
Two other counsels namely Majen Panyog and Abun Sui Anyit also represented Zulhaidah.
In requesting for the amount of bail to be reduced, Abun said the accused is just a housewife without income.
Magistrate Nasrul after hearing both parties ordered Zulhaidah to be released on bail of RM4,000 for each charge with one surety pending trial fixed for Aug 15 and 16, this year.
Zulhaidah’s father Hadie stand as her surety.

EVERYWHERE TALK ABOUT BERSIH 2.0
KUALA LUMPUR: Rally participants will be arrested, IGP warns
Posted on July 8, 2011, Friday
KUALA LUMPUR: Police will arrest anyone who participates in any illegal rally planned for tomorrow, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar warned yesterday.
There would be no exception, he said, adding that the organiser of the rally, Bersih 2.0, had been declared an unlawful organisation.
“It is clear that it is not a registered organisation. They can apply for permit using other name and we will consider their request. The government has given them the opportunity (to hold the rally indoor); they should utilise it properly,” he told a news conference at Bukit Aman police headquarters, here.
Ismail said the district police chief would look into the application before referring it to the management of the place where the gathering would be held.
In the case of the rally planned by Bersih at the Merdeka Stadium, here, he said the stadium’s management had yet to approve any application for the purpose.
The organiser was previously reported to be planning to hold the rally at the stadium.
It had yet to submit any application for permit to hold the rally, however, claiming that it was not necessary because the government had given its green light for the group to gather at a stadium and not in the streets.
Ismail said that even if the rally was issued with permit, police would still arrest those who created trouble and undermined public order.
“This is important to safeguard the interest of the society who wants to see peace prevails.
“I called her (rally organiser Datuk S Ambiga) yesterday and reminded her about the importance of maintaining public safety and asked her to abide by the law, even more so that she is a lawyer,” Ismail said. — Bernama

Sng confirms appointment as youth advisor in CM’s Dept
Posted on July 7, 2011, Thursday
Larry Sng
KUCHING: Former assistant minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Larry Sng yesterday casually confirmed what Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had told reporters.
When contacted Sng the former Pelagus assemblyman said he started helming the youth advisor post in the Chief Minister’s Department on July 3.
Happy with the appointment, Sng quipped: “I am now looking for an office before I can start work.”
He said the name of the new post might be different from the previous one but the role and function should be the same.
Planning ways to develop volunteerism among youths would be a good start in the appointment, as revealed in his facebook.
When approached by reporters on July 1, Taib confirmed their speculation that Sng would be going back into the government’s fold without giving any details.
Sng failed to get re-nominated to defend Pelagus for the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the last state polls because he was party less.
He was sacked by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) for insubordination prompting the Registrar of Societies to intervene in party affairs and concluded in April 2009 that (Tan Sri) Dr James Masing was the rightful president following a leadership crisis.
Taib, however, kept Sng in the government and even hinted to Masing and PRS that Sng’s rightful place was in BN by adding one assistant portfolio on top of the previous two.
The party’s stand to shut Sng out appeared costly because Pelagus now fell into opposition’s hand in the April 16 election.
The Borneo Post published a speculative story on June 30 about Sng’s possible appointment, who is now one of those who has made it into the list of major surprises by Taib.
The last of Taib’s major surprises was when Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem became Special Advisor in the Chief Minister’s Department. Adenan, also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Information chief and Tanjung Datu assemblyman, is now Special Function Minister in the same department.

Dato Mohmad Salleh
KUCHING: State police commissioner Dato Mohmad Salleh said the security situation here is calm, unlike in the peninsula which is gripped by the highly-publicised Bersih 2.0 rally.
“Everything here is well under control,” he said on Tuesday when asked by reporters to comment on the situation here in relation to the July 9 rally.
Salleh, who had earlier closed the Sarawak contingent-level Al-Quran recital competition, confirmed that thus far only state PKR Youth secretary Zulhaidah Suboh had been arrested in connection with the rally.
She will be under remand until tomorrow to facilitate investigation.
Zulhaidah, who was wearing a yellow T-shirt and with the word ‘Bersih 2.0’ printed on it, was detained at the Miri Airport last Monday.
Salleh advised members of the public to stay away from any unlawful assembly which is organised in support of Bersih 2.0 as stern action would be taken against them.
It is understood that the opposition planned to hold rallies in all major towns throughout the country this Saturday in support of Bersih 2.0.

PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said yesterday that Bersih remains an illegal organisation although its leaders were granted an audience by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on Tuesday.
He said the Registrar of Societies decided to declare Bersih an illegal organisation last Friday after receiving advice on the law from the Attorney General.
He told reporters here that Bersih would still require a permit although they had been allowed to hold a gathering in a stadium.
“Let them apply first. The process is for the police to consider the application. So, the quicker they apply, the quicker the police can process (and decide) on the place and time,” he said.
Bersih steering committee chairman Datuk S Ambiga said after the audience with the King that her group had decided to have the gathering inside a stadium.
Yesterday, Ambiga said that the organisers planned to hold the gathering in Merdeka Stadium, and gave an assurance of cooperation to ensure a peaceful event.
Asked why the government was willing to allow Bersih to hold the rally in a stadium, Hishammuddin said it was a matter of security.
He cautioned against irresponsible behaviour at the gathering.
“Those who said they want free and fair elections must prove they are responsible.
“They said before that they wanted to voice it (their views). Now we have given them space and opportunity at the stadium. So my advice to everybody is to just be responsible and work within the law,” he added. — Bernama

Mixed reactions to Bersih 2.0’s latest decision

MIRI: The people here have mixed feelings about the decision made by Bersih 2.0 organisers to go ahead with the July 9 rally but in a stadium and not on the street.
The decision was announced by its chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan after an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara on Tuesday.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said he was always against illegal rallies because it could bring
about many negative consequences to the people and country.
“I thank God for His intervention through Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. They have prevented untold disaster from happening by getting the proposed Bersih 2.0 street rally off the street,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.
Dennis, who is also Telang Usan PBB Youth chief and deputy information chief of PBB Youth, said he believed the rally organised must have thought they could achieve whatever agenda they might have on the streets.
“The aftermath of previous street rallies held in our country and in other counties is for all to see. Even when the organisers guaranteed that their rallies would be peaceful, untold destruction to properties and injuries to people often happened,” he said.
Dennis believed that the July 9 rally was politically motivated based on its timing and the people behind it.
“I’m also perplexed with the reason given in support of the street demonstration by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, the Menteri Besar of Selangor. He said that the rally was to voice the demands of the people and it was for the future generation. What kind of example is there to be learned by our young generation with all the chaos created by illegal rallies?”
Dennis added that Telang Usan PBB Youth supported all initiatives taken by the government, and that include joining other BN Youth members to mount counter rallies if requested to do so.
Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling Sie Kiong, meanwhile, said he respected the decision of Bersih 2.0 to call off the street rally. It is a “positive step” and a clear show of respect for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The onus now lies with the Najib administration to lift the ban on Bersih 2.0. Up to now some 200 arrests have been made by the police based on unjustifiable grounds such as wearing Bersih t-shirts.
“The police must drop the charges immediately and release those under remand, such PKR’s Zulhaidah Suboh. The Home Minister should also release all six individuals detained under the Emergency Ordinance (EO), including Sungei Siput MP Dr. Jayakumar.”
Meanwhile, Peter Kallang, who is the chairman of Persatuan Kenyah Miri (PKM) and Orang Ulu National Association (Miri), described the eight demands by Bersih as “reasonable and necessary”.
This is because the eight points are some of the basic characteristics which are “justifiably expected of a country which is elected by and answerable to the civil society”.
“These demands are not new as they have been in the public arena for a long time, yet the responds could either be pending or not fulfilling. So I can well understand why the rally is the next step.”
Peter said Ambiga and her boys had clearly showed they are reasonable people and one who were willing to listen to reason by taking the rally off the streets and into a stadium after the audience with the King.
He added that holding the rally in a stadium is perhaps the best alternative to avoid irresponsible elements from hijacking the event for their own immoral objectives.
“My view is that we must keep the original objective of the even foremost in our mind. The objective of the event is inclusive and good for every Malaysian, irrespective of background, so that we will continue to progress as responsible society upholding justice for each one of us.
“An open, transparent and just society is vital to achieve developed nation status by 2020.”

ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim
MIRI: Police yesterday advised members of the public not to be involved in any local rally which support the Bersih 2.0 rally which is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on July 9.
Miri district police chief ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim said unless they had a permit to stage the rally as required by law, stern legal action would be taken against everyone involved.
He also advised members of the public not to wear yellow T-shirts this Saturday as they might be subjected to scrutiny by his men.
“At the moment, Miri police have yet to receive any application for permit to hold the rally in support of the Bersih 2.0,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.
He was asked to comment on recent news report that such rallies might be held here, in Bintulu, Sibu and Kuching.
State DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng told a press conference in Sibu on Tuesday that all its 12 assemblypersons in the state would assemble in Kuching this Saturday to lend support to the Bersih 2.0 rally which calls for fair and free elections.
On comments made by the opposition concerning the arrest and remand of state PKR Youth secretary Zolhaidah Suboh on Monday at Miri Airport, ACP Jamaluddin explained that the move was made under Section 47 of the Society Act 1966 to facilitate investigation.
Zolhaidah, 38, who was wearing a yellow T-shirt printed with the words ‘Bersih 2.0’, was arrested upon emerging from the arrival hall of the airport after a flight from Kuching.
Thus far no further arrest or criminal offences in connection with the rally have been made.
Meanwhile, Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling Sie Kiong told a press conference here on Tuesday that the remand was “unnecessary” and the grounds stated by the police were inadequate.
Ling, who is Zolhaidah’s counsel, said S. Manikavasagam was detained and investigated by the police under the same section but was
released four hours later after his statement was recorded.
Thus, he said, the police here should have the same capability and efficiency in completing their investigation fast in Zolhaidah’s case.
